Nowadays every penny counts, not to mention every dollar. You’ve probably decided to budget more tightly to make your money go further. One place you are undoubtedly spending more than you would like is on clothing for the family. We all want to look nice and this can add up.
You can save major money on clothing for your family without looking like you dress yourselves at the Goodwill. There’s a happy medium between looking lousy and trying to wear designer items all of the time. It doesn’t take as much money as you think to come across as well dressed and express your personality. The following tips can help you save the next time you go clothing shopping for your family:
Stay away from trends. Trends come and go. Inevitably what was hot one day will be seen as ridiculous the next. If you are always following the latest designs to come out of Tokyo or Paris, you’ll end up with an expensive wardrobe you won’t want to wear!
You may find yourself standing in front of your closet wondering what possessed you to buy the clothes inside. This is because the clothes you bought were more about the “in” thing than about your personal style. Stick with what suits you, and is fashionable but not trendy.
With kids clothing, this translates to avoiding clothes with characters on them. The hot cartoon or movie character from today is old hat next year or even next month. Plus, kids decide quickly that some things they used to like are now ‘too babyish’ for them as they get older. You don’t want their clothing to fall into this category.
Dry cleaning is part of the price of a garment. When you buy a garment that has to be dry cleaned, this greatly increases the cost of wearing that article of clothing. What can seem cheap at the store suddenly becomes pretty expensive over time. Don’t buy clothing that must be dry cleaned.
You should only buy clothing that you can wash at home, and that aren’t terribly delicate. Items that require special handling or care add to your workload or end up ruined and in need of replacing. If you must, you can get the special detergents that add wearable life to various fabrics and items (dark clothing detergent, soap for silks, and so on).
Accessories add to the cost of outfits. An accessory here or there can be a good idea, but if you start getting a good collection of accessories going you will find that you are adding considerable cost to your clothing budget.
